Welcome
to M521A Abstract Algebra . In this course we will be focusing
mainly on Group Theory. A few decades ago, group theory could
have been regarded by scientists and engineers as merely providing
a very valuable tool for the elucidation of the symmetry aspects
of real-life problems. However, rececent developments, particularly
in high-energy physics, have transformed its role, so that it
now occupies a critical position to help usunderstand how the
universe was formed and how it has evolved.
Specific examples from interdisciplinary
areas will be covered as time allows it. The course
is intended for senior undergraduate and first year graduate
students in Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, Engineering,
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.
